Up until recently, scientific research estimated the increase of transmission protection given by the use of condoms of 50. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Washington, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other centers reduced that number to 30 for HSV-2 genital herpes.
In other words, you only have 30 less chance of catching herpes from someone who has genital herpes type 2 if you use condoms each and every time.
This number seems quite small but when combined with other transmission risk management strategies it can increase to 80 to 90 limiting transmission risks to 10.
For example, it seems that the longer a relationship, the less likely a person is to catch herpes from his/her partner so faithfulness and fidelity seems to pay off.
